Botox & Dermal Fillers

Repeated contraction of the muscles of the face when we smile, talk, frown and chew result, with time, in lines, that end up marking the skin. By reducing the ability of the muscle to contract, these lines are no longer formed and will soften over time, as the overlying skin has time to recover. Anti-wrinkle injections are recommended when the lines remain visible when the muscles are not contracted, at rest.

Botox injections are done in specific areas to minimize the action of specific muscles, reducing its contraction and therefore the wrinkles formed by it. The result takes 3-7 days to appear and usually lasts for 4-8 months, depending on the area treated.

The most common uses for anti-wrinkle injections are for treatment and prevention of crow’s feet, frown lines, forehead lines and bunny lines (nose). Great results can also be achieved in the treatment of gummy smiles, reducing the activity of the muscles that pull the upper lip up when smiling. Botox can also be used to reduce the activity of overactive muscles in patients suffering from grinding and clenching, usually in conjunction with a night guard.

How Dermal Fillers work

As we age, structural components of the skin such as collagen and elastin are lost, leading to wrinkles, folds and lost of volume of the lips. Dermal fillers are used to act like a support to the skin and add volume, regaining a more youthful appearance.

The latest dermal fillers are made from hyaluronic acid (HA), which is a substance widely present in the human body, throughout the joints, skin and neural tissues, 50-60% of it being found in the skin. Other than dermal fillers, HA has also been used in skin moisturizers, eye drops, osteoarthritis treatment and wound healing products due to its distinctive moisturizing and visco-elastic properties.

As an injectable material, HA is very safe, with minimal potential side effects and predictable clinical outcomes. It has been widely used to treat nasolabial folds, Marionette lines, smokers lines and to increase volume of the lips. The difference is immediately visible after application, even though it is not yet the final expected result. The final results are normally visible after 2 weeks, when the patient needs to be reassessed by the dentist and a touch up will be done, if required.

Dermal fillers are contra-indicated to patients with known hypersensitivity to hyaluronic acid, during pregnancy and breast-feeding, existing scar tissue and patients susceptible to keloid scarring.

In order to make the process more comfortable to the patients, dermal fillers performed by the dentist can be done under local anaesthetics, using intra-oral injections.
